Administration in Amritsar

With Punjab having a total of 22 districts, Amritsar is the most populous one.

Managing such a large city in terms of population and also its tourism based importance can be a challenging task. But, the administrative bodies of the city do it efficiently.

There have been many tragic incidents in the past that the city has witnessed, but this has never come in way of governance, making Amritsar a peaceful city.

Amritsar Municipal Corporation

When it comes to the management of public affairs and interest, the Municipal Corporation of Amritsar plays the most important role. With the Mayor heading the corporation, the counselors along with him ensure that there is complete management in the city. There are a total of 65 wards which was increased from 60 in 2007. The current Municipal house was formed on 19th September, 2012.

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner

It is the Deputy Commissioner in Amritsar who is responsible for the general administration of the city. Playing a pivotal role he ensures collection of revenues and is also the District Magistrate and Collector.  Right from controlling the law and order and heading the police force, the Deputy Commissioner manages well a peaceful environment in the city. Assisted by officers from different departments the administration remains efficient in its work.

Courts in Amritsar

The District court at Amritsar underwent many changes, but continued to play an important role in the law and administration of the city. There was a separation of the executive from the judiciary, prior to which the District Magistrate was the in charge. This took place in the mid 90’s post which there was a movement in the order. Now, both civil and criminal justice in the District Court of Amritsar is headed by the District and Sessions Judge. This thus led to 35 courts which are operating in Sessions Judge and Small cases court.

Jails in Amritsar

In Amritsar there are two prisons which are part of the same complex, often referred to as the Amritsar Prison Complex. The two jails, Central Jail 1 and Central Jail II have been in existence since 1957. This very complex in totality has more than 2,000 prisoners, which is for a fact more than the number that is sanctioned.
