Geography of Amritsar

Located near the Pakistan border, Amritsar is one of the most populated cities in the state of Punjab. The city falls about 410 kilometers northwest from the capital, New Delhi. For long the city has been regarded as a religious place where the commercial activities happen at a great pace and is the Mecca of Sikh religion. Here, the most famous sacred place is The Golden Temple which captures massive attention and tourist rush each year.

Founded in 1577, the credit for Amritsar’s being goes to the fourth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Ram Das. With the temple as the center of major religious activities, Sikh religion and culture grew around it, making Amritsar one of the most pious lands in the country. With such connectivity and being a major tourist spot, Amritsar has managed to grow in many dimensions. The city is also well connected with major parts of Punjab.

At about an average height of 755 feet above sea level, there are many natural and man-made hurdles which cause problems in the city. Amritsar is prone to heavy rainfalls which later don’t flow easily because of the stoppages. This often leads to road blocks and even flooding in the city. The city rests on a saucer shaped basin which also results in the indirect flow of the water coming in.

The flora of Amritsar is well conditioned for the growth of plants and vegetation. The soil has the ability to absorb moisture making the land fertile for cultivation. The rain too helps in the same for the conditions better once the showers hit the lands. In the gardens here are grown plants which are very relevant in daily use. This may be for the culinary experience or medicinal. Kachnar, Sohanjana, Lasuna are some of the prominent plants which come into great use.

Speaking of the fauna, you will find in Amritsar and its surroundings, black bucks, venomous snakes and jackals which remain the most commonly seen creatures.

Climate in Amritsar

Divided into four seasons, the climate remains at an extreme during summers and winters. Winter season in Amritsar starts from November to March. The months between April and June face hot air which also leads to a lot of humidity in the city. 

Monsoons calm the heat from July onwards till September, which is then followed by post monsoons which lasts just till the beginning of November. June remains one of the hottest months in Amritsar where the climate is very dry with temperatures going up to 40 degrees. The humidity too remains high in the mornings and starts diminishing towards evening. But all in all the hot waves make it uneasy.

January on the other hand is one of the coldest months in Amritsar. Since the temperature has a tendency to drop below the freezing point, you will also see frost formation at this time, making it extremely cold. Rains are common even during the hottest season and of course during monsoons.

Amritsar witnesses heavy showers too. The sky remains clouded mostly during the winter season. Winds are strong during the hot months but calm towards the end of it. Winters are not very windy as the waves remains light. The winters are also prone to fogs where visibility becomes an issue. There have been many flight cancellations because of the same in the past years. During summers, there are dust storms which take place because of the excessive head and dryness in the atmosphere.
